When Competition Means Nothing

After a 9 month break I'm back to dancing again. I'm not actively teaching, while keeping  pace as part of the cast/family with Mr. Henry's.

In heading back on the floor, I'm keeping all thoughts away from competition.

In the dance world, many people think that winning is important. Who gets the highest score or placement is a big focus. A lot of stress in the dance world is the struggle for people to "win".
Which dancer will end up with the highest placement, the best teacher, the most expensive dress , the most successful students, or the highest points on the leaderboard? Fear of losing creates a lot of stess. I'm starting to think that many people in DanceSport struggle with a faulty expectation of what dancing is all about: that it's a process with winners and losers. In reality, there are very few situations in the dance world where competition has any real meaning.

Appreciating the opportunity to dance, and being thankful for what we can do,to the best of our ability, that's what is really important. I've been very fortunate over the last few weeks, working very gradually with coaches and friends to start dancing again. Its been great to rekindle some movement, with such positive energy.
